About The Position

The Assistant Dean of the College will play a key role in the College’s advising community while also directing the College’s structures and processes for collecting, interpreting, and narrating the student experience in the undergraduate curriculum. Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College for Curriculum, the Assistant Dean will contribute meaningfully to the College’s ongoing assessment and compliance work, building a culture and infrastructure that encourages and facilitates the use of strategic data across all of the College’s constitutive units. The Assistant Dean will manage special reporting and assessment projects in collaboration with the Associate Dean and Deputy Dean, preparing assessments and presentations for a variety of audiences and purposes. The Assistant Dean will also support projects related to accreditation and that seek to streamline systems that manage the undergraduate curriculum and associated reporting requirements. The Assistant Dean offers auxiliary advising to student-athletes in close collaboration with the residential college advising staff, which has primary responsibility for the academic progress of all Princeton students. Requirements

  • Doctorate or other terminal degree
  • 5+ years work experience
  • Demonstrated experience and impact in student advising
  • Sound judgment and a commitment to the highest standards of professionalism and responsibility
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and solution-oriented approach to identifying reporting needs and working collaboratively with other stakeholders to address them
  • Experience leading strategic initiatives that involve multiple stakeholders and cross functional teams
  • The ability to create legible, impactful reports for diverse audiences
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Powerpoint or other presentation software.

Nice To Haves

  • A nuanced understanding of the Princeton curriculum and various measures of academic preparation and performance
  • Substantial experience and strong working understanding of data fields in PeopleSoft systems and related IW reports.

Responsibilities

  • Meet regularly with members of the College’s strategic data team to monitor internal reporting needs and prepare assessments for use in various College settings.
  • Identify and develop reports in Stellic and the Information Warehouse to support the needs of College staff and prepare narrative assessments and presentations that are appropriate for different audiences and settings, including accreditation and related compliance projects.
  • Develop and maintain a nuanced understanding of data fields in PeopleSoft, communicating with colleagues in the Registrar’s and Provost’s offices about structural changes with system-wide implications.
  • Lead and support operations around the management of curricular data, including discovery and scoping efforts on new systems (for instance, to develop curricular maps).
  • Identify opportunities to translate the College’s academic and advising priorities into technical and systems needs for further development, and refine data collection processes to support the needs of the College.
  • As part of the ODOC advising team and reporting to the Associate Dean, serve as a liaison between Athletics, the College, and the residential college advising staff in matters related to student-athlete academic and co-curricular experiences.
  • Exercise appropriate independent judgment while fostering strong collaborative relationships with other campus partners around advising and supporting student athletes.
  • Build and maintain close relationships with coaches and teams around academic performance, including: Organize and conduct academic roundtables (team-based) and academic-athletic strategies workshops.
  • Meet one-on-one with coaches annually (June); as needed (Dec-Jan), supplying data for ongoing portrait of student-athlete performance.
  • Meet with recruits as needed.
  • Hold regular office hours in Jadwin, Dillon, Meadows.
  • Sit with and attend meetings of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Athletics and Campus Recreation (FACA).
  • Collaborate with Athletics to recruit faculty to the Athletics Fellows program.
  • Direct and coordinate nominations for student-athlete prizes and fellowships.
  • Advise students, coaches, and athletics administrators on academic integrity issues, supporting student disciplinary cases as needed.
  • Provide auxiliary advising to student-athletes on issues related to: Scheduling and time management. Challenges involving faculty. Course struggles/course load concerns.
  • Special projects will be determined by aligning the needs of the College with the strengths of the Assistant Dean.
