About The Position

Lyon College is seeking an Assistant Dean of Students supports the Vice President for Student Life & Dean of Students in shaping the vision for the student experience and in developing, implementing, and enforcing student policies. This role assists in strategic leadership for Student Life staff with a primary focus on student safety and well-being, overseeing budgets, policies, procedures, and evaluation.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Student Affairs or related area.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in student support.
  • Experience with student conduct, crisis response, and case management.
  • Experience with and understanding of Title IX, Title VI, FERPA, and other higher education regulations.
  • Experience with strategic planning and policy development in higher education.
  • Experience supervising professional staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a complex work environment.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and project a welcoming and supportive presence.

Responsibilities

  • Review all standard operating procedures annually.
  • Review major safety policies annually in collaboration with relevant College committees and departments.
  • Provide direct supervision and strategic guidance for the Director of Student Accountability & Well-being, including budgetary oversight.
  • Facilitate and support departmental assessments according to required schedules.
  • Facilitate and support federally mandated reports such as hazing, alcohol and drug use, safety, etc. Administer student conduct processes in accordance with institutional policies and applicable laws.
  • Educate students on community standards, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Respond to student crises, including behavioral concerns and emergencies.
  • Assist with after-hours and on-call responsibilities as required.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and case documentation.
  • Assist with policy development, training materials, and procedural guidelines.
  • Supervise Student Life professional staff and student employees as assigned.
  • Partner with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to support student success.
  • Represent the Dean of Students Office on institutional committees and task forces.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, and campus partners.
  • Attend conferences, webinars, and other professional development events (Some overnight commitments will be required.).
  • Carry out Dean of Students’ duties when the Dean of Students is absent.
