About The Position

The Graduate Life Office (GLO) at Stanford University is a pivotal entity within the Student Life division of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs. This office is dedicated to providing essential support and resources to graduate students and their families, as well as to the various offices and individuals that assist these students. The GLO's mission is to deliver relevant services that address personal challenges and facilitate the academic success of graduate students. It organizes programs aimed at fostering connection, socialization, and community among graduate students, serving all individuals living both on and off-campus. The office's initiatives include welcoming and orienting new students, as well as developing educational, social, multicultural, and recreational programs. Additionally, GLO provides critical support and advice to students facing personal difficulties and responds to emergency situations as they arise. In this role, the Assistant Dean of Students will direct complex programs and functions in consultation with senior management. Responsibilities include administering, implementing, and interpreting university and departmental policies related to various student services such as admission, financial aid, housing, and academic advising. The Assistant Dean will be tasked with identifying and resolving complex issues that may span multiple areas, utilizing expert knowledge and independent judgment. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of diverse complexities, where the analysis of situations or data necessitates an in-depth evaluation of various factors. The Assistant Dean will also evaluate and implement appropriate protocols for addressing critical student issues and crises, while networking with key contacts both within and outside the department. The role involves providing comprehensive support services to graduate students across all seven schools at Stanford through consultation, case management, crisis response, and programming that enhances the quality of graduate student life. The Assistant Dean will oversee a student services program, assess its effectiveness, and make decisions regarding student eligibility. They will critically analyze and resolve complex student and program issues, manage student cases independently, and serve as an emergency responder during severe student emergencies. The position also includes developing and implementing both virtual and in-person programs, collaborating with colleagues and campus partners to offer diverse programming, and advocating for students during crises. The Assistant Dean will participate in new student orientation, resource fairs, and recruitment efforts, providing guidance on a wide range of issues including academic progress, career plans, and mental health.
