About The Position

The assistant dean for studies shares with the residential college dean responsibility for the academic progress and well-being of approximately 800 undergraduates affiliated with the college. The primary focus of the assistant dean is the undergraduate transition to college and to departmental studies. Reporting to the residential college dean, the assistant dean for studies works closely with the dean and the assistant dean for student life to ensure a holistic approach to student advising and support. The assistant dean for studies takes a leadership role in developing and managing college programming that promotes curricular exploration and builds college community. The assistant dean for studies has responsibility for the implementation of core academic advising programs, which are coordinated by the associate dean of the college for academic advising. These programs include: the academic components of first-year orientation, the recruitment and training of faculty members who serve as academic advisers in the college, and the recruitment and training of peer academic advisers who offer student perspectives on academic issues to first-year students and sophomores.

Requirements

Prior undergraduate teaching and/or advising experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent analytical skills; ability to work to deadline
Excellent judgment, discretion and attention to detail
Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross-college and cross-campus team
Ability to take direction, receive constructive feedback; to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment; and to tolerate ambiguity in a fluid working process
Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary
This is a full-time, in-person position

Responsibilities

The assistant dean for studies oversees academic advising and the implementation of academic regulations for the first-year and sophomore students resident in the college (e.g., degree audits, processing transfer credit requests, supporting students on academic probation, etc.). Reporting to the residential college dean, the assistant dean for studies is part of the core advising team in the college, and works collaboratively with the dean and assistant dean for student life to support student progress to degree. The assistant dean for studies meets with students around all academic aspects of college life, connecting them to other university resources as appropriate. (45%)
The assistant dean for studies meets regularly with the associate dean for academic advising and the other residential college assistant deans for studies, working together on developing, implementing, and updating core academic advising programs, the faculty adviser program, the peer academic advising program, and the academic components of first-year orientation. The assistant dean for studies works closely with college faculty advisers and with departmental faculty to advise individual students on all aspects of their academic programs and progress towards the degree. The assistant dean for studies recruits, trains, mentors, and meets regularly with peer academic advisers and oversees college planning around the academic transition to Princeton and academic support. The assistant dean for studies also works closely with university programs that support the success of first-generation, low income, and transfer students, and acts as liaison to one or more other university units. Working closely with other members of the college staff, the assistant dean for studies takes a leadership role in developing and managing college programming to promote curricular exploration and build college community. This creative and responsive programming begins with first-year orientation and provides a consistent framework for an intellectual community among the college’s students, fellows, and staff; the role also involves close collaboration with academic departments and a variety of campus offices, as well as with graduate students resident in the college. During the academic year, the programmatic responsibilities of this job require that the assistant dean for studies work some evenings and some weekends in addition to normal business hours. (20%)
All assistant deans for studies are expected to undertake special projects under the direction of the head of college, dean, or the Office of the Dean of the College: for example, administration of fellowship and award competitions, administration of academic support programs, study abroad advising, service on university committees, or research projects. All assistant deans of studies are also expected to engage actively with the wider university community, for example as fellows for athletic teams or affiliates of campus programs. (10%)
