The assistant dean for studies shares with the residential college dean responsibility for the academic progress and well-being of approximately 800 undergraduates affiliated with the college. The primary focus of the assistant dean is the undergraduate transition to college and to departmental studies. Reporting to the residential college dean, the assistant dean for studies works closely with the dean and the assistant dean for student life to ensure a holistic approach to student advising and support. The assistant dean for studies takes a leadership role in developing and managing college programming that promotes curricular exploration and builds college community. The assistant dean for studies has responsibility for the implementation of core academic advising programs, which are coordinated by the associate dean of the college for academic advising. These programs include: the academic components of first-year orientation, the recruitment and training of faculty members who serve as academic advisers in the college, and the recruitment and training of peer academic advisers who offer student perspectives on academic issues to first-year students and sophomores.
