About The Position

The Assistant Curator for Prints & Drawings and Arts of Asia at The Art Institute of Chicago plays a vital role in supporting the departments by caring for, researching, and interpreting the collections. This position involves collaboration with curatorial staff to enhance the visibility and reputation of the museum, develop community interest, and support exhibition proposals. The assistant curator will engage in collection management, original research, donor stewardship, and public outreach, contributing to the museum's mission of fostering an inclusive understanding of human creativity.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in art history or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of two to three years of experience working in museums, galleries, or curatorial capacities required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google suites required.
  • Knowledge of foreign languages as appropriate to areas of specialty.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with museum-specific collection databases.
  • A record of scholarly achievement in areas of specialty.
  • Interest in pursuing distinct areas relevant to expanding the collection.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the collection under the guidance of the Rothman Family Curator and Pritzker Chair.
  • Recommend acquisitions and deaccessions, and cultivate relationships with donors.
  • Support collection management through cataloguing, database upkeep, and object care.
  • Conduct original research and produce documentation and content for the collection.
  • Assist with donor stewardship and fundraising efforts in consultation with External Affairs colleagues.
  • Help conceptualize and propose exhibitions, including planning and organization.
  • Create innovative interpretive content and programming to enhance audience engagement.
  • Serve as a museum representative through lectures, interviews, and tours.
