About The Position

The Summit County Prosecutor's office in Akron, Ohio, has multiple openings for an assistant prosecutor in the Criminal Division. There are two classifications, a Junior Prosecutor, who will typically handle felonies of the third, fourth, and fifth degree (salary range $80,000 to $85,000); and a Senior Prosecutor, who will typically handle felonies of the first and second degree (salary range $90,000 to $95,000). The position also carries OPERS pension benefits and eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness. This is a rotating position that allows for promotion to Senior Prosecutor, Major Trial, and Supervisory positions based on the needs of the Office and the development of the employee's legal and leadership skills. The Office will also consider recently-admitted attorneys with no prior experience at a starting salary of $77,500 for the Criminal Division or at a starting salary of $75,000 with an initial assignment to handle delinquency or abuse, neglect, and dependency matters in Juvenile Court. Requirements

  • Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio with no history of disciplinary action.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and present cases to be tried in court.
  • Research and prepare briefs and opinions.
  • Negotiate resolutions to cases.
  • Prepare a variety of legal documents.
  • May supervise law clerks/interns.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the law.
  • Coordinate with advocates to provide services to victims.
  • Meet with law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, judges, and court personnel to discuss and review cases.
  • Identify impacts of trauma and modify legal practices to enable traumatized witnesses to safely participate in proceedings.
  • Prepare cases for trial or plea negotiations by reviewing all evidence, facts, and communications with witnesses.
  • Question and cross-examine witnesses.
  • Participate in pre-hearing conferences, issue subpoenas and other appropriate orders relating to the discovery process.
  • Prepare for and present evidence to grand juries.
  • Maintain records, consistently update case management system, and answer correspondences in a timely fashion.
  • Participate in internal and external conferences and meetings.
  • Serve as a liaison with other agencies and the community.
  • Independently research, interpret and apply legal and administrative principles to each case.
  • Engage in continuing education, both legal and non-legal, to stay up to date on best practices and new ideas.
