About The Position

The City of Boston is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel I (ACC I) within the Office of Labor Relations. The successful candidate will assist with representing the City in negotiating collective bargaining agreements, interpreting and administering such agreements, and representing the City in litigation that stems from such negotiations and the enforcement of such agreements. In this environment, Counsels are expected to work collaboratively with other Counsels within a complex and highly diverse work environment. Requirements

• A Juris Doctorate Degree.
• Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with no disciplinary record.
• At least one to three (1-3) or more years of experience, preferably within a government agency or in labor relations.
• Ability to read and interpret legal documents such as decisions, briefs, opinions, and contracts.
• Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of law, including labor and employment law.
• Strong critical thinking skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, Westlaw, Lexis, and Social Law Library.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
• Excellent, clear, and effective writing and organizational skills.
• Maintains professional working relationships with opposing counsel and senior-level staff.
• Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress.
• Ability to write concisely and effectively, to express thoughts clearly, and to develop ideas in a logical sequence.
• Ability to make effective oral presentations and communicate effectively in oral expression.
• BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED

Responsibilities

• Represent and assist other counsel in representing the City in all aspects of labor law litigation, including arbitrations, the Department of Labor Relations, and the Civil Service Commission.
• Perform legal research and render opinions to City officials and Departments by identifying and assessing legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment area.
• Provide in-house legal counsel on labor and employment-related matters, which may include, but are not limited to, human resources issues, wage and hour law, state agency claims, labor relations, employee benefits, collective bargaining agreements, and policy-related issues.
• Responsible for managing assigned caseload representing the City of Boston.
• May conduct investigations in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources by gathering information, interviewing individuals, and reviewing documents regarding personnel investigations and/or policy violations.
• Responsible for litigation preparation, advice on municipal law matters, negotiation, and other assignments.
• Perform work as required.
