About The Position

The City of Burlington is seeking an Assistant Cook to support the daily operations of our volunteer-run Bistro and food service programs. This role assists the Chef and Food Services team with daily meal preparation, counter service, inventory tasks, and menu development for both small and large-scale events. This role will deliver quality food experiences for adult and older-adult participants. The position requires strong teamwork skills, an understanding of the volunteer cycle, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse and intergenerational community. Staff are supported by the Coordinator, Food Services and report to the Supervisor, Recreation Services. Hours vary based on program needs, special events, and seasonal meal programs. Hours worked may vary from 0-27.5 hours per week with typical weeks being 8-12 hours. Evening and weekend programs occur on a regular basis, and availability during these times is required.

Requirements

  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. They will foster teamwork, provide leadership to dedicated volunteers and display patience, empathy and active listening skills.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C and Food Handling Certification required, or ability to maintain prior to first shift
  • Experience working with Adults and Older Adults (55 years of age and over) are requirements of this position.
  • All staff must complete mandatory training prior to their first shift; training is offered through a combination of online and in-person learning.
  • This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
  • This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.

Responsibilities

  • Provide initial and ongoing coaching to volunteers to maintain a consistent, safe, and healthy environment for staff and customers; communicate safety updates and notify the Supervisor if further action is required.
  • Facilitate and support the food services program in a fun, motivating, and safe environment.
  • Assist with daily kitchen operations including food preparation, program set up, meal service, and clean up.
  • Maintain high standards of food safety and sanitation in accordance with Public Health and Safe Food Handling requirements.
  • Support the creation and execution of weekly and monthly volunteer schedules and communicate shift duties and service expectations for coordinator review.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as tallying sales, balancing cash, updating menu boards, and submitting receipts.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching and guidance to volunteers to ensure a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • During event or program delivery, ensuring flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances with positivity and modifying delivery or plan as needed while maintaining quality and enjoyment.
  • Adapting to the different needs of participants and volunteers.
  • Working collaboratively with Customer Experience and Facility Operations staff.
  • Maintain positive, respectful communication with community members, volunteers, and staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
