About The Position

With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for a full-time Assistant Cook in the United Community Centers Early Learning Center Program. The cook is primarily responsible for preparing and serving all food in the center and for maintaining the kitchen in a sanitary and efficient condition. Additionally, the cook is responsible for the supervision and training of other staff assigned to kitchen or food service responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Previous related experience in food preparation (preferably in large quantities), dishwashing and housekeeping.
  • Must be certified in Food Protection certifications.
  • Ability to read and write in order to follow and prepare written menus, recipes and work schedules.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with other staff, children, parents and visitors of the center.
  • Must clear DOE and DOHMH fingerprinting and background requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Follows individual work schedule provided by the Director to indicate specific responsibilities and the time scheduled for them.
  • Cooperates in total staff effort designed to improve the center's services.
  • Participates in periodic individual conferences and regular staff meetings as scheduled by the Program Director. These will be called when changes are planned in the children's program that affect the Cook so that discussions and suggestions for improving the services may be shared among the Director and staff. Such meetings will also be called when policy or changes are to be made affecting budgetary needs for food and supplies or rearrangement of space. Participation in staff parties and attendance at parents' meetings are also encouraged but not required, as a means of promoting a feeling of total staff unity and providing opportunities for informal exchanges of information between parents and total staff.
  • Works with the Program director to ensure that all food handling services are of the highest quality. Participate in all updates in food handling and preparation.
  • Maintains a minimum of 15 hours per year in professional development in-service training. These should be primarily addressed to the functions related to food service and record keeping.
  • Prepare, cook and service food according to recommended practices set by UDSA, CACFP, DOH
  • Follow weekly menus made in consultation with the program director. Confer with the program director when menu changes are indicated, i.e., necessary substitution or the use of leftovers.
  • Allocate appropriate portions of food for children's groups according to need and regulation.
  • Make local food purchases when necessary.
  • Recognize by face, any child or staff in the program with an allergy or food restriction. Make appropriate substitutions for allergies and/or food restrictions.
  • Use effective and secure practices in data collection and management to contribute to accurate reporting of kitchen practices including ordering of kitchen food and non-food products, meal preparation and distribution.
  • Wash dishes and utensils according to sanitary practices.
  • Keep kitchen and storeroom in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition, i.e., range sink, refrigerator and cupboards.
  • Keep kitchen equipment and utensils in good condition.
  • Place kitchen garbage in designated covered receptacles daily.
  • Ability to keep inventory of supplies on hand as needed.
  • Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
