About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join our accounting team. This role will provide right-hand support to the CFO, handling day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, cash management, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on property management experience with both commercial and residential portfolios as well as managing a small accounting department. Salary range $160-$190k. In addition to typical accounting responsibilities, the accounting team is charged with supporting the leasing, property management, and operational teams in the field. We seek someone who can think beyond the process. Someone who can interpret the story behind the numbers, identify issues and take action. Ability to manage priorities on a daily basis, pivot and provide ad hoc support to CFO, staff, and partners in a timely manner. The office atmosphere is friendly and professional. Requirements

  • Hands-on experience executing year-end close and supporting tax return preparation.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in commercial real estate property management.
  • Hands-on accounting, CAM reconciliation, and payroll processing experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mid-year review and year-end close, including preparation of financial statement workpapers and supporting schedules.
  • Oversight and execution of all aspects of Accounts Payable.
  • Prepare annual CAM reconciliations:  Review lease agreements and expense records to accurately identify, allocate, and reconcile common area maintenance charges. Prepare CAM budgets. Communicate results to tenants.
  • Ensure proper treatment of tenant direct expenses and landlord costs.
  • Lead and manage the accounting team, ensuring accurate and timely accounting records.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as benchmarking, housing licenses, real estate tax, use and occupancy tax, and DOS registrations.
  • Active oversight of cash balances, bank recs, and debt service.
  • Coordinate audits and liaise with external auditors.
  • Maintain and adapt internal controls, policies, and procedures as needed.
  • Interface with insurance agent and consultant on policy renewals and premium payments. Track loss data as needed.
  • Process semi-monthly payroll on ADP TotalSource platform. Onboard and offboard employees. Lead HR matters as needed with guidance from ADP TotalSource (CPEO).
