About The Position

The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of United Petroleum Transports (UPT). This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and timely close processes across a multi-location, asset-intensive transportation environment. The Assistant Controller plays a key role in scaling financial processes to support growth, acquisitions, and operational excellence while upholding UPT’s Vision, Values, Mission, and commitment to the Responsible Care® guiding principles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
  • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with ERP/accounting systems required.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to partner across Operations, HR, and Leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CPA-eligible strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in transportation, logistics, manufacturing, or asset-intensive industries preferred.
  • Experience in multi-entity or multi-location environments.

Responsibilities

  • Support and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analyses.
  • Assist in the preparation of consolidated financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, including accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, fuel inventory, and intercompany transactions.
  • Assist with technical accounting research and implementation related to new standards or business changes.
  • Maintain consistent accounting treatment across UPT and any affiliated entities.
  • Help design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Coordinate audit preparation and serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors.
  • Support SOX-style controls and documentation, as applicable.
  • Proactively identify and remediate control gaps or process inefficiencies.
  • Partner with the Controller and FP&A to support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide insights to leadership.
  • Support operational and capital expenditure analysis related to fleet, maintenance, and facilities.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and development for accounting staff.
  • Review work product for accuracy and provide constructive feedback.
  • Serve as a backup to the Controller when needed and act as a trusted resource to cross-functional leaders.
  • Support financial system enhancements, automation, and process improvements.
  • Partner with IT and HR systems teams to ensure accurate integration of payroll, benefits, and labor data.
  • Drive efficiencies that improve close speed, data quality, and scalability.
  • Promote a safety-first mindset consistent with UPT’s Responsible Care® commitment.
  • Ensure accounting practices support regulatory compliance across transportation, fuel, and chemical operations.
