About The Position

The Assistant Controller leads a three-person general ledger and tax team, overseeing cash flow, general ledger activity, and financial reporting for APA and its affiliated real estate entities (APA Ten G, APA 750, and the Conference Center). The role includes managing audits, tax filings, and financial statements across multiple entities, supervising staff accountants, and overseeing a contracted accounting service provider. Reporting to the Deputy CFO, the Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring compliance with financial regulations and maintaining the integrity of financial reporting.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's in accounting or Finance with accounting concentration.
  • CPA required.
  • 12+ years of accounting experience including general ledger management and financial reporting.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial operations and compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting standards.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with lease accounting and depreciation schedules.
  • Proven experience supervising or mentoring a small accounting team.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in accounting software and technology integration.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for monthly, quarterly and year-end general ledger closures for APA.
  • Plans, assigns, reviews, and approves work of staff accountants, including account schedules, bank reconciliations, credit card and bank fee analyses, journal entries, and fee allocations.
  • Manages cash flow, cash transfers, and the line of credit.
  • Maintains bank account setup and signature authority.
  • Interacts with bank representatives, vendors, and service providers.
  • Maintains the chart of accounts in the accounting system.
  • Ensures proper internal controls and manages compliance with debt covenants.
  • Reviews and approves dues and subscription rate tables and account strings.
  • Responsible for the accounting and reporting for the LLCs.
  • Oversees external contracted accountants and ensures accuracy of monthly reports and schedules prepared by them.
  • Calculates annual management fee charges to LLCs.
  • Manages audits and monitors policies and procedures.
  • Guides, trains, and educates staff on accounting policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for APA consolidated financial statements and tax return preparation.
  • Acts as the main contact to audit and tax consultants; ensures timely audit wrap-ups and tax filings for all entities.
  • Conducts tax research and calculates estimated tax deposits.
  • Manages the 401k audit and 5500 filing.
  • Maintains the Finance Policies & Procedures Manual and ensures adherence to GAAP.
