Public Works currently has a vacancy for Assistant Construction Inspector (6317) within the Bureau of Project Delivery - Construction Management division. Under general supervision, as an Assistant Construction Inspector, you will perform construction inspection in conjunction with Public Works' projects to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, applicable codes, and safety regulations.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience in construction inspection work ensuring that plans and specifications are complied with, and the workmanship and material used meet specifications;
  • A baccalaureate degree from an engineering or architecture program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET);
  • Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience in construction, at the Superintendent/General Foreman level, supervising construction crews of more than six (6) employees. Journey-level construction experience and/or drafting experience will not be accepted as qualifying.
  • Requires possession of a valid California driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with inspection of one or more of the following scopes of work:
  • Underground utilities installation such as sewer, water or electrical
  • ADA Curb Ramp construction
  • Asphalt and Concrete Paving
  • ACI and/or Asphalt Institute Certification
  • Familiarity with work within the Public Right-of-Way. (Note: "Public Right-of-Way" shall mean the area across, along, beneath, in, on, over, under, upon, and within the dedicated public alleys, boulevards, courts, lanes, roads, sidewalks, spaces, streets, and ways within the City, as they now exist or hereafter will exist and which are or will be under the permitting jurisdiction of Public Works.)

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and/or witnesses testing of contract material, equipment, and installations.
  • May monitor the excavation, loading and off-haul of hazardous materials from construction sites and ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws pertaining to hazmat. Ensuring compliance with contract plans, specifications, applicable codes and regulations.
  • Monitors and inspects work of contractors for compliance with contract plans, specifications, applicable codes and regulations.
  • Ensures that the quality assurance/quality control program for each project is enforced.
  • Prepares and maintains project documentation and controls including daily reports, force accounts, materials testing, and other construction records for construction projects.
  • Conducts planning, preconstruction, coordination, progress, scheduling, and field staff meetings.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, constructability reviews, and contract closeout records.
  • Assists in resolving disputes and problems and responding to complaints from the public that require resolution at the senior level.
  • Verifies and prepares quality assurance reports and quantity and progress estimates for progress payments and change order work.
  • Reports safety and traffic hazards, defective work, and housekeeping issues to the contractor for correction and ensures that the contractor corrects deficiencies.
  • Drives a departmental vehicle to inspection sites.
