About The Position

High Point University Athletics department is seeking an Athletic Trainer/Assistant Coach to provide comprehensive medical care and athletic training services for Cross Country and Track & Field student-athletes. This role includes injury evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation planning, return-to-play decisions, and maintaining accurate medical records. The position also supports athletic training education through student supervision and contributes to program operations, recruiting, compliance, and student-athlete development while ensuring adherence to NCAA and university policies and promoting athlete health, safety, and well-being. The role involves ensuring appropriate medical care for student athletes for assigned sports, providing supervision for athletic training students within a CAATE-approved athletic training education program, and executing specific strategic activities and outcomes within the assigned sport or area, including adhering to the Head Coach’s philosophy and athletic instruction/coaching program operations. The position is responsible for oversight of all administrative operations regarding student-athlete development, monitoring academic progress and well-being, and ensuring participation in community service. It also assists with recruiting by attracting, evaluating, monitoring, and maintaining relationships with prospective student-athletes, identifying talent, setting up recruiting visits, and recruiting on-campus novice prospects. Additionally, the role assists with team social media strategy and posts, maintains personal compliance with all relevant governing bodies (NCAA, conference, athletic department, university policies), attends required compliance educational meetings, and completes recruiting logs. The position requires maintaining professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders, making independent decisions regarding student-athlete participation when the head coach is absent, ensuring student-athlete welfare while coaching, and exercising independent discretion on purchases and budgetary decisions. This role models behaviors and leadership for student-athletes and has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of athletic injuries, treatment methods, rehabilitation, record keeping, taping and bracing methods
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with others
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Analytical, problem solving and reasoning ability; independent judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to utilize Smartabase injury tracking software
  • Ability to travel as required

Nice To Haves

  • NCAA rowing experience strongly preferred
  • Collegiate Coaching experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive medical care and athletic training services for HPU Cross Country and Track & Field Student-Athletes
  • Analyze injuries, develop and implement treatment and rehab programs, makes doctor referrals and return to play decisions
  • Preceptor supervising Athletic Training Students
  • Assist with drug testing for collegiate athletics at HPU
  • Ensure all student athletes have proper HPU Sports Medicine documentation submitted
  • Input data for injured athletes into injury tracking software
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with students, students’ parents, faculty, co-workers and managers
  • Ensure appropriate medical care for student athletes for assigned sports
  • Provide supervision for athletic training students within CAATE- approved athletic training education program
  • Execute specific strategic activities and outcomes within assigned sport or area, including: adhere to Head Coach’s philosophy, athletic instruction/coaching, program operations and administration as designated by the head coach

  • Assist with recruiting: attracting and evaluating prospective student-athletes, monitoring prospective student-athlete academic progress and well being, developing and maintaining relationships with prospective student-athletes and other recruiting constituents, identifying talent, setting up recruiting visits, and participating in active recruiting of prospective student-athletes, recruit on-campus novice prospects
  • Assist with Team Social Media: coordinating with the head coach on social media strategy and posts
  • Maintain personal compliance with all relevant governing bodies including: NCAA specific conference athletic department university policies
  • Attend all required compliance educational meetings
  • Successful on-time completion of all recruiting logs
  • Maintain professional relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Make independent and unchallengeable decision-making regarding all student-athlete participation in assigned sport activities when head coach is not present
  • Ensure student-athlete welfare while coaching
  • Exercise independent discretion on all purchases and budgetary decisions for program
  • Role model behaviors and leadership for student-athletes
  • Report allegations of crimes received from students and employees to the Campus Safety Department (as a Campus Security Authority)
  • Other duties as assigned
