SDIRC Steps to Employment as an Athletic Coach 1. Submit your application for an Athletic Coaching Certification with the Florida Department of Education . 2. Apply to become an Athletic Coach through the district’s website . 3. Wait to be contacted by Human Resources to schedule your orientation appointment. This only occurs once an offer of employment is extended and accepted. Orientation includes the following fee: Fingerprinting/Workplace screening fee: $118.00 Payable by credit or debit card only at time of service using Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Discover is not accepted. Please note: You may not begin employment until the orientation is complete and Human Resources has given final clearance. Athletic Coaching Certification All coaches who do not hold a valid Florida Educator’s Certificate are required to obtain either a Three-Year or Five- Year Florida Athletic Coaching Certificate . Three-Year Athletic Coaching Certificate A one-time , nonrenewable three-year certificate in Athletic Coaching may be issued to an individual who: Submits an application and the current processing fee of $75.00 with the Florida Department of Education . Has been approved to volunteer and completes fingerprinting through the FDLE and FBI after being accepted for a coaching role. Five-year Athletic Coaching Certificate A five-year certificate in Athletic Coaching may be issued to an individual who: Submits an application and the current processing fee of $75.00 with the Florida Department of Education . Meets the specialization requirements for the Athletic Coaching Endorsement (Rule 6A-4.0282), which include: o Three (3) semester hours in Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries and the effects and dangers of drug use, including performance-enhancing drugs. o Three (3) semester hours in coaching theory. o Three (3) semester hours in theory and practice of coaching a specific sport. o A valid CPR certificate from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. o First Aid certification, including training in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Has been approved for employment and completed fingerprinting (FDLE/FBI), with results no older than one year. Coursework Options The course requirements may be met through college coursework or the Human Kinetics Athletic Coaching Endorsement program , which is approved under the School District of Indian River County’s Master Inservice Plan.
