About The Position

The City of Lawrence is seeking a collaborative and service-minded Assistant City Attorney to join their legal team. Requirements

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active Kansas law license in good standing
At least two years of municipal or comparable legal experience
Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
The ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal audiences
Comfort managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment

Nice To Haves

Experience in government, civil, or criminal law practice.

Responsibilities

Serve as a trusted legal advisor to City leadership and staff
Draft ordinances, contracts, and legal memoranda that shape City operations
Research and interpret evolving laws and provide clear, actionable guidance
Represent the City in court and administrative proceedings
Provide training to staff on legal topics and risk awareness
Support Police and Fire Medical personnel
Contribute to public-facing discussions and decision-making
