About The Position

The Assistant City Administrator is a newly created role within the City of Verona, responsible for providing leadership and operational support across all departments. This position serves on the executive leadership team and assists with project management, policy implementation, and budget preparation. The Assistant City Administrator may also act in the absence of the City Administrator, ensuring effective municipal administration and collaboration among departments.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Public Affairs, Political Science, Business Administration, or related field is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; will communicate with the public, City Administrator, department directors and staff, elected and appointed officials, other units of government, and contractors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected and appointed officials, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to provide leadership, supervision, and train others.
  • Ability to research, provide facts, exercise independent judgment, and use techniques and principles to achieve policy goals.
  • Ability to advise and interpret the application of policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving direction, control, and planning of programs.
  • Familiarity with standard word processing, spreadsheet software, and Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to effectively develop and communicate technical recommendations to Boards, Commissions, elected officials, other governmental officials, and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience with management and administration of local government is preferred.
  • A Master's degree in Public Administration, Public Affairs, Business Administration, or related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist departments with completing long-range, strategic plans and management of operating and capital budgets.
  • Provide operational support to all departments.
  • Lead sustainability and other special initiatives assigned by the City Administrator that require coordination of multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Resolve internal and external inquiries or complaints across the organization.
  • Establish priorities and work collaboratively with department heads on their overall department vision; prepare and implement goals, objectives, and policies accordingly.
  • Keep the City Administrator informed of the status and finances associated with assigned projects.
  • Alert the City Administrator to any potential or existing issues on municipal administration requiring review, evaluation, and executive decision-making; develop and recommend solutions accordingly.
  • Provide professional advice to the City Administrator, City Council and department heads.
  • Make informational presentations to the council, boards, commissions, civic groups and the public.
  • Assist elected officials with questions regarding department operations and provide recommendations to policy makers when necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of public sector administration for application of functions under their purview.
  • Assist the City Administrator in preparation and administration of the annual City budget and the Five-Year Financial Management Plan.
  • Attend meetings at the request of the City Administrator.
  • In consultation with the City Administrator, apply for and administer grants.
  • Administer the property, equipment and liability insurance program.
  • Oversee the risk management program.
  • Act as the City Administrator in the absence of the City Administrator.
