About The Position

The Assistant Chief Inspector, Construction position at the NYC Department of Buildings involves supervising inspections of buildings and structures to ensure compliance with NYC Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution, and other relevant laws. The role supports the Deputy Director of Strategic Inspections and is integral to the Heightened Enforcement Against Known Bad Actors Program, which aims to protect New Yorkers from repeat offenders in the construction industry. The position requires effective planning, coordination, and execution of inspection activities, as well as the ability to respond to incidents and enforce regulations.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in construction trades or related work.
  • A license as a professional engineer or registered architect, or a Site Safety Manager license from the NYC Department of Buildings.
  • Sixty credits towards a degree in civil engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or a closely related field.
  • One year of experience in construction trades and one year of formal training or education in an acceptable construction program.
  • Completion of a minimum two-year apprentice program in a construction trade or building inspection.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience to the above qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Deputy Director in conducting efficient and effective inspection work to attain target goals.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate the work of a team or unit.
  • Prepare work schedules and monitor outcomes of inspections.
  • Assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  • Prioritize assignments and coordinate workflow to ensure timely achievement of unit goals.
  • Ensure inspections are conducted in accordance with NYC Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution, and Department rules and regulations.
  • Respond to, report, and investigate accidents, incidents, and complaints during field inspections.
  • Issue violations, summonses, and stop work orders; verify licenses of onsite workers.
  • Study drawings to obtain details for inspections and explain/enforce relevant laws and rules.
  • Conduct joint inspections with other inspectors and special field inspections.
  • Testify as needed at ECB, depositions, and court.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Train subordinates in their duties and review applications relevant to the field.
  • Represent the Department at meetings and conferences with public agencies and private entities.
