About The Position

Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer to support building operations at a luxury high‑rise residential cooperative in Washington, DC. This role works closely with the Chief Engineer to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all building systems while delivering exceptional service to residents. This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on engineering professional with strong central plant HVAC experience and a customer-focused approach.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of building engineering or maintenance experience in a luxury residential, condominium, cooperative, or hotel environment
  • High-rise building experience with central plant systems strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps, and BAS
  • Experience coordinating vendors, contractors, and capital projects
  • Strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional, service-oriented demeanor
  • Ability to climb, kneel, and work around mechanical equipment
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs independently and move heavier items with assistance
  • EPA Universal CFC Certification (Section 608) – Required
  • DC 6th Class Engineer License or Maryland 3rd Class Engineer License – Preferred
  • All certifications must be current and in good standing

Nice To Haves

  • High-rise building experience with central plant systems strongly preferred
  • DC 6th Class Engineer License or Maryland 3rd Class Engineer License – Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Support preventive maintenance programs to ensure optimal system performance
  • Monitor and maintain central plant equipment, including: Chillers, cooling towers, boilers, pumps, and heat pumps Air handling units and water treatment systems Building automation systems (BAS)
  • Respond promptly and professionally to resident service requests
  • Coordinate and oversee vendors and contractors for specialized repairs and maintenance
  • Assist with capital improvement projects and system upgrades
  • Monitor contractor and renovation work for safety and compliance
  • Maintain accurate logs, work orders, PM schedules, and equipment documentation
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to building emergencies
  • Perform general maintenance, including minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work
