About The Position

The Assistant Chief Engineer supports the Chief Engineer in the comprehensive management of mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and fire life safety systems for a critical site campus. This hands-on leadership role ensures facility operations run smoothly and efficiently, safeguarding mission-critical infrastructure by combining technical expertise, administrative acumen, and staff supervision. Acting as the Chief Engineer’s primary deputy and reliable point of contact in their absence, the Assistant Chief Engineer serves as a vital link between senior facility leadership and technical operations staff. The role requires a proactive approach to maintenance, operations, regulatory compliance, vendor management, and employee engagement to ensure all building systems meet the highest standards of reliability and safety.

Requirements

  • Significant experience (typically 5+ years) in complex facility operations, including MEP and fire life safety systems, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Technical certification or licensure (e.g., HVAC, electrical, boiler operator) strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms (Maximo or similar) and standard office software.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory codes and best safety practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Oversight Provide direct supervision, daily work assignments, and technical guidance to operations staff, ensuring completion of preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Conduct daily morning meetings to review preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) work orders, delegating tasks and monitoring progress.
  • Troubleshoot, support, and coordinate repairs for MEP and building systems, including boilers, chillers, and all HVAC equipment.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety Organize and support annual safety training sessions, including LOTO (Lockout Tagout), SPCC, and HSSE programs, ensuring all records are accurately maintained.
  • Schedule, conduct, and document routine inspections: LOTO devices, personal protective equipment (PPE), elevators, kitchen exhaust hoods, grease traps, Ansul systems, wet/dry fire protection, roof conditions, chemical storage, generators, cooling tower cleaning, boiler tuning and cleaning, and monthly SPCC oil tank inspections.
  • Review and maintain Safety Task Analysis documentation, SPCC training records, and facilitate insurance inspections and audits.
  • Ensure all water treatment testing and record keeping are updated with contractors.
  • Arrange for regular testing and servicing of safety equipment.
  • Administrative Management Maintain accurate records of employee time reporting via Maximo, review PM work orders, generate follow-up work orders, and update maintenance scopes in the Maximo PM system monthly.
  • Review and submit monthly utility consumption and emissions data as required for compliance and reporting.
  • Support the collection and entry of HSSE, ERM, and JCAP data.
  • Catalog and maintain blueprints and technical documentation to facilitate ongoing and future projects.
  • Vendor and Contractor Coordination Liaise with service vendors and contractors to ensure timely completion of inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Monitor contractor performance and compliance with site standards and regulations.
  • Leadership & Team Engagement Foster a culture of safety, ongoing learning, and operational excellence.
  • Step in for the Chief Engineer as required, ensuring leadership continuity and consistent communication with all stakeholders.
