About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to perform coaching duties for one or more teams as assigned by the Head Coach. A related responsibility is to assist the Head Coach with program development or coordination duties as requested. The Assistant Cheer Coach will effectively communicate in English, and potentially Spanish or Russian if assigned, both orally and in writing. Key functions include conducting regular practice sessions to improve athlete skills and knowledge, instructing and coaching athletes during practices and contests, modeling good sportsmanship, and enforcing team rules and discipline. The coach must adhere to athletic eligibility requirements, District Athletic Handbook, league or association SOPs, and OSAA rules. Supervision of athletes during practices, games, travel, and related activities is required, along with providing program information to parents and notifying media if requested by the Head Coach. The role involves submitting rosters and equipment inventories, consulting with the Head Coach regularly, and temporarily assuming Head Coach responsibilities in their absence. The coach is also responsible for establishing and maintaining appropriate student behavior standards, involving parents/guardians as needed, and following all safety rules to provide a secure learning environment. Support for District Core Values, Mission, Strategic Plan, and Schoolwide Improvement Plan is expected, along with maintaining positive relationships with students, staff, administration, parents/guardians, and community members. The position requires compliance with professional development, active participation in activities to improve competence, and attendance at various meetings. The coach should hold high expectations for self and students, assess performance for improvement, demonstrate computer literacy, and maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records. Adherence to laws, District policies, and ethical standards (TSPC Standards) is mandatory, as is regular attendance and punctuality.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Background and Criminal History Clearance.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching and Oregon State Component Certification (High School only).
  • Demonstrates high level of communication skills and meets District standards for oral and written language proficiency in English, and if applicable, in Spanish or Russian.
  • Skill in leadership and facilitation, including problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent organizational skills for effectively managing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of rules and coaching strategies for assigned sport.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board or administration may deem appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular practice sessions to improve skills and knowledge of the athletes and team in general.
  • Instruct and coach athletes in performance skills and techniques during practices and contests.
  • Model good sportsmanship and enforce appropriate team rules and team discipline.
  • Adhere to athletic eligibility requirements, District Athletic Handbook, league or association SOPs, and applicable OSAA rules.
  • Supervise and/or arrange for proper supervision of athletes during practice, games, travel, and any related activities.
  • Provide program information to parents and notify media of program and contest information if requested by Head Coach.
  • Submit rosters and equipment inventories as required.
  • Consult with the Head Coach on a regular basis regarding individual, team, or program issues or needs.
  • Assume responsibilities of Head Coach on a temporary basis in his or her absence.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate standards of student behavior and maintain order in a consistent and fair manner.
  • Notify and involve parents/guardians regarding a student’s behavior in accordance with school and District requirements.
  • Follow all safety rules and take all reasonable precautions to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all assigned students.
  • Demonstrate support for District Core Values, District Mission, District Strategic Plan, and Schoolwide Improvement Plan.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and respectful learning environment and working relationship with students, staff, administration, parents/guardians, and community members.
  • Assist parents and community members as needed.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to multicultural and multilingual values and environments.
  • Comply with professional development activities as required by the District.
  • Actively seek out and participate in professional development activities designed to improve professional competence.
  • Participate in various meetings for the purpose of receiving information or sharing information and expertise with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.
  • Hold expectations for high performance of self and students.
  • Assess results of performance for improvement on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and operate software programs as related to job responsibilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law and District policy and regulations.
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague, or district patron, and uses or relays academic, social, or personal information only in the course of performing assigned responsibilities and in the best interest of the individuals involved.
  • Follow all laws, District policies, rules, regulations, memos, announcements, and reasonable requests by proper authority.
  • Adhere to the same ethical standards as outlined in Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) Standards for Competent and Ethical Educators.
  • Maintain regular attendance at work and work activities, and be punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.
  • Obtain a First Aid and/or CPR Card and serve as a Delegated Caregiver or Designated First Aid Provider.
  • Occasionally perform other duties as required by supervisor.
