About The Position

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is a prominent charity in the DC area, dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This seasonal Assistant Camp Director position, spanning from June through August, offers a unique opportunity to create engaging and impactful experiences for campers, foster connections with peers and Y professionals, and enhance leadership skills. The role involves assisting with the planning and implementation of the Y camp program in line with organizational goals and curriculum, providing leadership and mentorship to camp counselors, and ensuring the safety and quality of the camper experience.

Requirements

  • Be able to work from the week before camp begins for training to the end of the final week of the season
  • High school graduate
  • 21 years of age
  • Willing to participate in and obtain CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and/or fingerprinting
  • Meet the county/state licensing requirements
  • At least two summers of experience in day camp, recreation, physical education, teaching, or working with school age children
  • Prior experience assisting supervising staff
  • Work well with and in groups
  • Able to effectively communicate with children and parents
  • Understand and be committed to working with diverse population and to Y character development

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all campers have a fun, enriching, and safe experience
  • Assist with planning and implement the Y camp program in accordance with the goals and policies of the Y and the camp curriculum
  • Assist in providing leadership to camp counselors, including training and daily supervision
  • Mentor camp staff
  • Ensure daily schedule of activities is carried out for all groups of campers
  • Assist in conducting weekly team meetings and provide performance feedback on a daily basis
  • Ensure that all counselors have daily schedule and the appropriate supplies and resources to deliver a quality program
  • Be responsible for camper safety and security
  • Ensure adherence to the policies of the Y
  • Motivate, energize and encourage counselors to deliver outstanding programming and customer service daily
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as required
