About The Position

The Assistant Bus Mechanic supports the safe and efficient operation of the district’s transportation fleet by performing skilled mechanical work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of school buses and other district vehicles. Under the direction of the Head Mechanic and Transportation Director, this position diagnoses mechanical and electrical issues, conducts preventive maintenance, and completes repairs on diesel- and gasoline-powered engines, brakes, drivetrains, and related systems.

Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in automotive or heavy truck mechanics, OR
  • Attainment of full journeyman status as an automotive or heavy truck mechanic, OR
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant hands-on experience in automotive or heavy truck repair and maintenance, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and practical experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months of employment, a valid State of Washington driver’s license with a Class B CDL, passenger endorsement, School bus Endorsement, and Air Brake.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle driving record under district insurance criteria.
  • Good physical condition with ability to perform heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Knowledge of Repair shop practices, including welding, safety regulations and practices.
  • Operating and repair characteristics for district buses, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Principles and procedures of preventative maintenance related to school bus vehicles and equipment.
  • Shop mathematics applicable to the mechanical trade.
  • Basic record keeping.
  • Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the repair and adjustment of school buses and other motorized vehicles and equipment including gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and systems.
  • Ordering parts from various parts manuals.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the areas of maintenance and mechanical repair work.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Ability to Use materials and equipment necessary in the repair and maintenance of buses and other motorized vehicles.
  • Follow and give verbal and written instructions and directions.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Read, interpret, understand, and apply technical manuals, schematics, diagrams, specifications, and parts catalog.
  • Interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to the assigned programs and functions.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Certification (School Bus or Medium/Heavy Truck) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform journeyman-level work in the repair, service, and maintenance of school buses and all district-owned or leased vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and other related problems in school buses.
  • Perform all scheduled maintenance, including regular bus safety inspections, and carry out additional maintenance and repair tasks as assigned by the department head.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil and filter changes, tire repairs, brake adjustments, chassis lubrication, and servicing of wheel bearings and other components as needed.
  • Overhaul and rebuild engines, differentials, brake systems, and other components by repair and/or replacement of defective parts.
  • Repair and replace seat frames, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components.
  • Respond to emergency service calls for stranded buses or district equipment.
  • Operate trade-specific equipment safely and efficiently, demonstrating proficiency in its use.
  • Complete all maintenance record forms as may be required.
  • Keep the shop area clean, orderly, and safe.
  • Perform other duties that may not be related to trade as required including, but not limited to, custodial service in the transportation/food service facility as well as the receipt of food products at the food service warehouse as needed.
  • Drive school bus as directed by Transportation Director/designee.
