About The Position

The Assistant Building Engineer is responsible for helping the Building Engineer supervise and evaluate contractual building and equipment services at the library, maintaining the interior and exterior of the library building, maintaining the library grounds, and carrying out other duties in support of the Maintenance department and the library. The Assistant Building Engineer is also responsible for supervising the Maintenance Assistants in the absence of the Building Engineer.

  • Illinois driver’s license, proof of insurance, and access to a vehicle that can be used for transporting equipment and materials
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of electricity and wiring, HVAC systems, carpentry and plumbing, and an ability to use basic hand and power tools
  • Demonstrates an ability to use ladders and lift up to 100 pounds
  • Is physically able to make deliveries and pick up supplies within walking distance of the Library, and to make vehicle deliveries with a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Help the Building Engineer supervise and evaluate contractual building and equipment services at the library, which includes meeting with vendors, discussing the intended scope of work, and verifying compliance with library directives; helping procure competitive bid proposals from vendors and coordinating with the Building Engineer to retain the most competitive and qualified bids; and maintaining vendor service records, inspecting major equipment systems regularly, and overseeing state-mandated equipment inspections with supervision from the Building Engineer.
  • Maintain the exterior of the building and library grounds, which includes picking up litter on and maintaining library grounds when required; helping oversee landscaping maintenance and snow removal; overseeing exterior building, parking lot, and outdoor equipment maintenance and repair; and
  • Maintain the interior of the library, which includes painting and patching walls; replacing light bulbs and ballasts; and assembling, repairing, and/or modifying furniture, equipment, and building systems as needed.
  • Carry out other duties in support of the Maintenance department and the library, which includes training, supervising, and evaluating the Maintenance department staff and reporting progress to the Building Engineer; participating in staff meetings, staff development programs, in-service days, library committees, and professional development activities; helping develop and implement departmental procedure changes; running errands on behalf of the library; setting up meeting rooms; providing building-related assistance to staff and other organizations; supervising community service workers; assisting staff with visitor behavior problems; ordering and tracking departmental supplies; providing input to develop and administer departmental budget; and performing other duties as assigned.
