About The Position

The Eatonville Middle School Boys Assistant Basketball Coach is responsible for leading the school's boys JV basketball team. This role focuses on the foundational development of players, teaching fundamental skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The JV coach works closely with the varsity coach to ensure a cohesive program and a smooth transition for players who advance.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic basketball fundamentals, rules, and strategy is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to connect with and motivate middle school students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the varsity coach and other school staff.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification and completion of required coaching certifications (e.g., concussion training) are required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Requires availability for after-school practices and games, including some evenings.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience coaching or playing basketball is preferred but not required. A passion for coaching young athletes is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute practice sessions that emphasize fundamental skills such as dribbling, shooting, passing, footwork, and defensive positioning.
  • Introduce and teach basic offensive and defensive concepts appropriate for the developmental level of middle school players.
  • Provide constructive feedback and positive encouragement to help players improve their individual skills and build confidence.
  • Manage the team roster and player rotations during games, ensuring equitable playing time for all team members.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment where every player feels valued and has the opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Coordinate with the Athletic Director and Varsity Coach to schedule practices and games.
  • Assist with team logistics, including preparing for games and managing equipment.
  • Uphold and enforce all school and athletic department rules and policies.
  • Ensure all players meet academic eligibility requirements.
  • Maintain open and regular communication with players, parents, and the Athletic Director.
  • Address parent and player questions or concerns in a professional and timely manner, escalating issues to the Athletic Director or Varsity Coach as needed.
  • Provide updates on practice schedules, game times, and other relevant team information.
  • Serve as a role model for student-athletes, demonstrating and promoting positive sportsmanship, respect for officials and opponents, and a strong work ethic.
  • Encourage players to prioritize academic success and balanced personal growth.
  • Instill a love for the game and a commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
