The Battleship Assistant Director is the Chief Operating Officer of the Memorial and serves as the deputy and subordinate to the Battleship Executive Director. This position manages operations on the Battleship Memorial, visitor center, ship’s store and surrounding properties. Responsibilities include management of the day-to-day operations, budget development, contract and project development and management, engineering and technical planning for major renovations, and supervision of temporary staff and volunteers with the incumbent’s areas of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering and 5 years’ experience; or
  • Associate’s degree in an applicable field of engineering and 7 years’ experience; or
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience (including degrees/certificates from an appropriate naval or maritime school, in engineering or one or more technical fields related to shipboard maintenance).
  • Must be able to work Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM with 1 hour lunch break
  • Must be able to traverse steep stairs and ramp enroute to assigned workspace and work in cramped spaces that may have little or no climate control

Nice To Haves

  • Strong managerial, interpersonal and technical skills
  • An in-depth understanding of engineering and maintenance on naval ships as well as a basic understanding of NC building codes
  • Knowledge of both government and non-profit financial management
  • Experience in budgeting and contract development and oversight
  • Very strong working knowledge of computers, internal communications systems, and other IT platforms

Responsibilities

  • Daily Operational Oversight - Oversee all operational aspects of the Memorial including the supervision of the staff, volunteers, and contractors. Ensure the Memorial remains open, safe, and enjoyable to visitors.
  • Contract Development and Oversight - Research, develop, and administer restoration, maintenance, service, and repair contracts. Serve as liaison between DNCR and the Battleship Executive Director on capital projects.
  • Budget Development and Oversight - Support reporting department heads in the development of annual budgets. Provide strategic guidance and prioritize projects in accordance with the strategic plans developed by the Executive Battleship Director when so delegated.
  • Public liaison/Battleship Representation - Serve as Battleship’s representative to the visiting public in terms of customer service. Represent the Battleship on committees and at conferences when directed by the Battleship Executive Director. Fulfill the duties of the Battleship Executive Director when so delegated.
  • Miscellaneous Duties - Provide oversight of special events, rentals, creation, coordination, and oversight of area specific grants and worker’s compensation claims and investigations.
