Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; maintains a professional demeanor with customers, coworkers, and vendors.
  • Basic knowledge of perishability, seasonality, product handling, conditioning, and sanitation/safety procedures.
  • Good understanding of overall company practices and Bakery Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to frequently reach, lift, and maneuver items up to 60 lbs; frequent bending, stooping, and reaching required.
  • Able to push/pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks; performs repetitive arm motions for preparation, packaging, and product display.
  • Complies with company grooming and dress code standards.
  • Requires manual dexterity and strong eye‑hand coordination; able to stand for extended periods.
  • Mental alertness required to ensure accuracy and safety.
  • Knowledge of basic math, weights, and measures.
  • Operates telephones, pallet jacks, hand trucks, knives, scissors, safety cutters, kitchen utensils, can openers, microwaves, ovens, proofers, bread slicers, photo cake machines, and other bakery equipment.
  • Uses cleaning supplies and cleaning equipment as needed.
  • Uses computer software and electronic ordering systems.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays; schedule varies. Good attendance is required.
  • Potential exposure to hazards associated with bakery equipment and work aids.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with an emphasis on fast, friendly Customer Service.
  • Assists customers by making product suggestions, filling special orders, and offering food‑preparation recommendations.
  • Answers incoming calls, resolves customer concerns appropriately, and escalates issues to the Store Director when necessary.
  • Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques through telephone, intercom announcements, and one‑on‑one customer interaction.
  • Possesses full working knowledge of all department positions and assists with duties including preparation, baking, decorating, and product display.
  • Implements proper and efficient product preparation and packaging techniques.
  • Maintains bakery case cleanliness, visual appeal, and appropriate inventory levels. Ensures the appearance, sanitation, and cleanliness of the bakery and all equipment.
  • Ensures temperatures are properly maintained during all phases of preparation, display, and storage.
  • Assists with scheduling, supervising, training, and assigning tasks to bakery employees; helps ensure adequate coverage and service levels.
  • Assists with planning daily operations and monitoring production processes according to company procedures and profitability standards.
  • Assists with preparing sales and inventory reports; participates in physical inventory every 4 weeks.
  • Controls inventory to ensure proper quantity, quality, and freshness. Maintains division‑directed inventory levels, stocks/rotates products, and organizes the cooler.
  • Understands and follows all opening and closing procedures.
  • Builds bakery displays, rotates stock, and discards outdated or spoiled products. Maintains overall department cleanliness.
  • Follows company policies and guidelines outlined in the Albertsons/Tom Thumb Employee Handbook.
  • Ensures compliance with proper code dating for all bakery products.
  • Maintains bakery department standards, including freshness, quality, and presentation.
  • Implements effective promotional and seasonal displays.
  • Performs receiving duties including breaking down loads, verifying invoices, inspecting product quality, reporting shortages, stocking, and rotating.
  • Adheres to product temperature, storage, and packaging requirements; maintains accurate department records and administrative paperwork.
  • Accurately completes and monitors daily log sheets, Production Charts, Sales and Labor reports, and all required documentation.
  • Controls shrink and departmental costs.
  • May attend and participate in sales meetings and communicate department goals, performance, and sales opportunities to employees.
  • Ensures correct product temperature levels, accurate signage, and compliance with retail labeling laws, state and federal regulations, company policies, and code‑dating requirements.
  • Follows all workplace safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness, and sanitation of the sales floor, prep areas, cooler, freezer, equipment, and displays—including code‑date compliance.
  • Implements emergency procedures for equipment or software malfunctions.
  • Performs all duties safely, accurately, honestly, and with integrity.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
