About The Position

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a highly motivated person to join her team as an Assistant Attorney General in the Attorney General's Fair Labor Division. The Fair Labor Division (FLD) investigates and enforces the Massachusetts wage and hour and other laws governing fair labor standards and public construction bidding laws under Chapters 149 and 151 of the Massachusetts General Laws and related regulations. The candidate for this position will be primarily responsible for enforcing violations of labor standards under M.G.L. Chapter 149, M.G.L Chapter 151 and other related regulations and statutes.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, admission to the Massachusetts Bar, and at least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the practice of law.
  • Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date.
  • Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as ‘Counsel’ and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Legal experience and/or interest in protecting the rights of vulnerable populations, civil enforcement of labor standards or other rights, and/or criminal litigation experience in the district and superior courts including grand jury.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Interest in developing novel legal strategies to effectively combat wage theft and a working knowledge of Massachusetts labor and employment laws.
  • Ability to advise Office of the Attorney General staff and the public on legal matters by interpreting M.G.L. Chapter 149, M.G.L Chapter 149A, M.G.L. Chapter 30, 39M and M.G.L. Chapter 7C and other related regulations, statutes and case law. This includes educating the public on the laws, rules and policies governing Office operations, and investigating and adjudicating cases where violations of the public construction bidding laws may have occurred.
  • The candidate must be able to interact effectively and convey information.
  • The candidate must have the ability to adjust to changing situations and priorities and be comfortable spending significant portions of each day on the telephone and on virtual platforms.
  • The ideal candidate will be able to exercise discretion in handling confidential information, exercise sound judgment, recognize problems in daily work activities and bring solutions to address them.
  • We seek an individual who possesses excellent organizational skills, excellent computer skills including a proficiency in Microsoft Office, and who demonstrates an attention to detail.
  • Applicants must possess an ability to work successfully independently, as well as part of a team, and to perform the required work under deadlines.
  • Spanish, Portuguese and/or Chinese or other language fluency desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assistant Attorneys General are responsible for the enforcement of Massachusetts labor standards, including statutes that address non-payment of wages, overtime, minimum wage, child labor, public construction bidding, prevailing wages, labor trafficking, and diverse related statutes.
  • Assistant Attorneys General maintain an active case load and prosecute violations in civil, criminal and administrative proceedings.
  • Assistant Attorneys General also participate in community engagement initiatives, including making public presentations to employers and employees concerning the wage and hour laws.
