About The Position

The Utah Office of the Attorney General, Natural Resources Division, is seeking a senior attorney to fill the role of Assistant Attorney General specializing in Water Rights. This position is critical in representing the Utah State Engineer and the Division of Water Rights, providing legal advice on a wide range of issues including policy development, legislative matters, rulemaking, interagency coordination, and litigation support. The attorney will be involved in addressing complex federal reserve water right issues, which may include interactions with tribal entities. Additionally, the attorney will serve as an alternate representative to the Western States Water Council, further emphasizing the importance of this role in regional water management discussions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in western water law and have familiarity with other areas of natural resources law and policy. Excellent written and oral advocacy skills are essential, as the attorney will need to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely. The ability to work collaboratively within a team environment is also crucial. Preference will be given to applicants with five or more years of relevant experience, particularly those who have worked with the Utah State Engineer's Office. Candidates must be members in good standing of the Utah State Bar Association or be eligible to join within a reasonable timeframe. Background checks are mandatory for employment, and some travel may be required for this position, which is based in Salt Lake City.
