About The Position

The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General (1-6) in the Litigation Division. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Assistant Attorney General 1-6, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected. The position will be domiciled in Shreveport, Louisiana, Caddo Parish. This is a continuous announcement; therefore, applications will be reviewed as received. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory background check, drug testing, and reference verifications.

Requirements

  • Must possess a license to practice law in the State of Louisiana
  • Must be in good standing with the Louisiana Bar Association
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) mainly for state wide, state court appearances, but also for continuing education and other conferences, as required.

  • Experience in motions practice and presenting oral arguments, in state courts
  • Knowledge of collections laws, garnishments, state and federal court practice and procedure, and state agency collection practices

  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines

Responsibilities

  • Serves as primary defense counsel in all assigned cases in all phases of litigation from the inception of the case through final appeal
  • Performs legal research and drafts all pleadings, correspondence, or other documents in order to accomplish the above enumerated duties
  • Identifies and secures the assistance of experts and other necessary witnesses
  • Communicates timely and effectively with supervisors and clients on all developments in cases
  • Performs all administrative functions attendant to the position including preparation and submission of accurate reports of daily and monthly activities, case assessments, requests for settlement authority, and all documentation related to travel and expenses
  • Performs all work to comply with the IAT with ORM and LSU
  • Be punctual in attendance at all matters relating to defense of the cases assigned, maintenance of normal hours, and when required to render professional legal services; as well as, work the necessary hours in order to accomplish the tasks
  • Defending the State of Louisiana, other State agencies, and State employees in tort claims seeking monetary damages in the areas of Civil Rights, General Liability, Medical Malpractice, Road Hazard, Transportation and Workers' Compensation.
