The Assistant/Associate Professor (Vegetable Specialist) position at the LSU Agricultural Center is a tenure track role that emphasizes a combination of extension and research responsibilities, with an allocation of 80% extension and 20% research. The faculty member will be tasked with providing statewide leadership to the vegetable industries in Louisiana, focusing on the growth and development of small-scale vegetable production as well as home and school vegetable gardens. This role requires the individual to serve as a comprehensive extension resource for both new and established commercial producers, as well as home and school vegetable gardeners. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and delivering educational programming aimed at vegetable production, which includes training extension agents and conducting public outreach initiatives. Effective communication through various channels such as web content, social media, agricultural trade magazines, newsletters, blogs, and formal publications is essential for technology transfer and outreach to stakeholders. The faculty member will also participate in professional and technical meetings, contribute to annual vegetable extension publications, and support regional gardening programming for the Louisiana Master Gardener program. In addition to extension duties, the faculty member will conduct research and demonstration trials that target vegetable varieties and production practices to enhance yield and production efficiency for small-scale producers and home gardeners. The expectation is that the faculty member will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, trade journals, and on web-based platforms. The successful candidate will manage personnel and equipment resources, participate in outreach activities, and report to the Director of the School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences. Additional responsibilities may include supporting LSU AgCenter initiatives as needed.
