About The Position

The Director of Professional Life Skills and Associate Professor of Veterinary Medicine is a faculty position with administrative responsibilities. This role provides leadership for the Professional Life Skills curriculum, which prepares students for successful careers by developing essential professional competencies. Faculty in this role are expected to foster student learning, participate in research or scholarly activity, and engage in service to the profession and community. The Director oversees the simulated client and communications program, develops and delivers courses on professional identity, ethics, communication, and practice management, and leads assessment activities including communication OSCEs. 0.5 teaching, 0.4 service/admin, 0.1 research

Requirements

  • Advanced training or certification in communication, professional identity, or practice management.
  • Advanced degree and/or specialty board certification in a relevant discipline.
  • Prior teaching experience in a veterinary or professional program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and support to faculty and staff in the department, promoting professional growth and development
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to ensure the highest standards of teaching and support are maintained
  • Manage departmental resources, including budget, facilities, and technology, to support the effective delivery of the professional life skills program
  • Develop and manage the simulated client and communications program, which provides students with realistic scenarios to practice client interactions and communication skills
  • Oversee the training, development, and supervision of simulated clients, faculty and staff facilitators in communication case study material
  • Evaluate simulated client performance and help design and implement mechanisms to improve performance
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate simulated client interactions into the veterinary curriculum, ensuring alignment with learning objectives
  • Design and deliver courses on professional identity, ethics, communication skills, and practice management, tailored to the needs of veterinary students
  • Incorporate innovative teaching methods, such as case-based learning and simulation exercises, to enhance student learning and engagement
  • Establish and maintain goals and objectives for each course lecture and laboratory session
  • Meet classes according to published schedule
  • Uphold high standards of intellectual integrity and academic excellence in all teaching activities. This includes ensuring that course content is accurate, up-to-date, and relevant
  • Develop and implement assessments, including OSCEs to evaluate student competence in professional skills and practice management, providing feedback for continuous improvement
  • Conduct research to assess the effectiveness of the professional life skills program and make recommendations for enhancements
  • Maintain up-to-date records of student grades, evaluations, and performance
  • Prepare examination questions that accurately assess student understanding
  • Provide individualized support and coaching to students to help them develop their professional identities, communication skills, and practice management abilities
  • Serve as a resource for students seeking guidance on ethical dilemmas, communications challenges, professional conduct, and practice management issues
  • Foster relationships with veterinary practices and industry partners to ensure that the program meets the needs of the profession
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders to identify emerging trends and best practices in professional skills development and practice management
  • Ensure compliance with the standards and guidelines of accrediting bodies such as SACS and AVMA
  • Participate in departmental and university committees and activities
  • Develop an area of scholarship that enhances teaching and generates new knowledge
  • Collaborate with other faculty members on interdisciplinary research projects and grant applications
  • Perform other duties as assigned
