About The Position

The Department of Art and Design at the University of Memphis invites applications to a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Art History (the Dorothy Kayser Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History). This position offers an opportunity to help shape and launch a proposed PhD program in Art History and Visual Studies. We seek a dynamic scholar whose research focus is contemporary art and material culture studies, complementing the expertise of faculty in a multi-disciplinary department. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to developing a record of scholarly research and publishing within the field of Art History or Visual Culture Studies.

Requirements

  • PhD in Art History or related field (degree in hand by Spring 2026)
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a 3/2 course load, including art history surveys as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in Modern and Contemporary Art
  • Curriculum development, including the development of new courses within the candidate's area of specialization
  • Academic advising
  • Develop and sustain a record of scholarly research and publications
  • Engage in service to the department, college, and university
