About The Position

The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking applications for a full-time tenure track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Geographic Information Science and Systems (GIS), with a specialization in geospatial data science. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in geospatial computing and data science, which may include areas such as artificial intelligence, spatial modeling, big data analytics, geovisualization, and spatial statistics. We are particularly interested in candidates who utilize high-performance and/or data-intensive computing to address complex geospatial challenges. The successful applicant's research program should align with one or more of the department's current research strengths, which include cyberGIS, geospatial data science, remote sensing, health and medical geography, urban and economic development, river and watershed dynamics, transportation geography, and natural hazards/climate change. In addition to research, the successful candidate will be expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching responsibilities will encompass introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in GIS and geospatial data science, potentially including courses such as Environmental Data Science, Spatial Analysis, Geospatial Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and High-Performance Geospatial Computing. While most courses will be conducted in person, some may be offered online to support the Master's program in CyberGIS & Geospatial Data Science. The candidate will also be expected to establish and maintain an active and independent research program and provide service to the Department, the University, and the profession.
