About The Position

The Assistant/Associate Professor, Director of Bands position at Samford University's Division of Music is a full-time, 9-month faculty role that involves leading athletic bands and wind ensembles, teaching music education courses, and supervising student teachers. The successful candidate will contribute to the academic community in a Christian university environment, with responsibilities extending to curriculum development, student recruitment, and maintaining collaborative relationships with schools and community partners. This position is effective August 2025, with additional compensated responsibilities starting July 2025.

Requirements

  • Earned master's degree or DMA in Conducting (instrumental) from an accredited university.
  • Exceptional teaching skills, leadership qualities, and administrative abilities.
  • Experience in supervising student teachers.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly activity and successful academic teaching experience for associate professor consideration.
  • Expertise in marching band and wind ensemble direction.
  • Ability to teach courses in music education.

Nice To Haves

  • Earned terminal degree in music or music education for associate professor consideration.
  • Experience in leading diverse musical ensembles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead athletic bands and wind ensemble.
  • Teach classes in marching band techniques and Materials and Methods of Teaching Instrumental Music in the Secondary Grades.
  • Assist instrumental area faculty with ensemble development, curriculum, and student recruitment/retention.
  • Supervise student teachers.
  • Conduct additional ensembles as needed based on candidate strengths and school needs.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with public and private schools, Samford alumni, and community partners.
  • Actively recruit, retain, and develop leaders from music majors and non-music majors.
  • Participate fully in departmental and university service and maintain an active scholarly agenda.
