About The Position

The University of Hawai'i is seeking a highly skilled, professional, transformative leader in clinical, research, and education operations for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor (Academic Endocrinologist). The role involves significant collaboration with hospital systems and community-based clinical faculty, focusing on untapped clinical research opportunities in metabolic disorders, especially diabetes mellitus and obesity.

Requirements

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and/or American Board of Medical Specialties in Endocrinology.
  • Current Hawaii Medical license by date of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of independent research or independent investigator.
  • Principal Investigator or Co-investigator in NIH-funded or industry-sponsored clinical trials of metabolic disorders.
  • 5+ years of experience in teaching, clinical work, and research activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Proven ability to secure and oversee extramural funding.
  • Basic Life Support and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Eligibility for clinical privileges at our hospital partners.

Responsibilities

  • Educate residents, fellows, medical students, and other team care members in endocrinology through clinical teaching, precepting, lectures, workshops, or problem-based learning sessions.
  • Develop clinical services and a training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism to enhance the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Serve as a resource lead for endocrinology in the medical student curriculum (both pre-clinical and clinical).
  • Contribute to the development of endocrinology rotations or research electives for learners.
  • Collaborate with departmental and school leadership to facilitate the achievement of JABSOM graduation objectives and ACGME competencies.
  • Conduct research in basic science, translational studies, clinical trials, and/or other clinical investigations related to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or other chronic diseases influenced by neurohormonal factors.
  • Collaborate with the JABSOM Diabetes Research Center, the Cancer Center, and other research programs focused on cardiometabolic diseases.
  • Mentor clinicians in endocrinology-focused research.
  • Deliver clinical care that fosters and sustains a high-quality clinical learning and research environment.
  • May serve as the Division Chief for Endocrinology, collaborating with various departments and clinical practices.
  • Develop and execute the Division's strategic plans and initiatives.
  • Promote and advance excellence in research, education, and clinical collaborations.
  • Enhance care and prevention systems for patients with endocrine and metabolic disorders.
