About The Position

The Jacobs School of Music seeks candidates for a tenure-track or tenured position in musicology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Expected start date: August 1, 2026. Responsibilities will include maintaining an active program of research and scholarly publication at the level of an R1 institution; teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in music history and literature and musicology, including core courses in large-lecture format, advanced topics courses, and doctoral seminars in a large conservatory setting; advising Ph.D. dissertations and D.M. research projects; serving on doctoral major and minor field exam committees; and participating on departmental and School of Music committees and in other departmental activities. The musicology department values interdisciplinarity, collaboration, and community. We are a research department situated in a large music school, with strong faculty connections to the humanities and area studies in the college of arts and sciences. We teach students from a wide range of backgrounds in music history courses from the introductory through advanced doctoral levels, which often combine students seeking academic and performance degrees. The Jacobs School of Music serves over 1,500 students from the U.S. and as many as 55 countries from around the world, with special performance strengths in opera and ballet, symphonic music, jazz, and historical performance. Situated in the wooded rolling hills of southern Indiana, Bloomington is a college town with thriving cultural institutions, a moderate cost of living, and scenic outdoor spaces, including nature preserves, lakes, and hiking trails. The city hosts the Bloomington Early Music Festival and the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival each year. Faculty enjoy the cultural and intellectual vitality of IU’s many interdisciplinary centers, conferences and symposia, over 1,000 world-class performances presented yearly at the Jacobs School of Music, the Eskenazi Museum of Art, and an outstanding library system that includes the Lilly Library and wide-ranging special collections. https://blogs.iu.edu/jsommusicology/
