The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at any rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) to join a cluster hire focused on Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) aimed at understanding and addressing natural and climate change-related disasters. This initiative includes hires across various disciplines such as Earth Sciences, Economics, Geography, Journalism, and Statistics, all aimed at exploring the role of AI/ML in understanding the scientific foundations of environmental risks, the human dimensions of hazards, risk mitigation strategies, and the economic impacts of these hazards. The successful candidate will be expected to utilize and develop AI/ML methodologies to enhance disaster preparedness, focusing on predicting the frequency and intensity of natural and climate-related hazards, understanding their behavior and impacts, and assessing vulnerabilities at both local and global scales. Candidates from a wide range of Earth Science fields are encouraged to apply, particularly those whose research addresses natural hazards and disasters related to the lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, or atmosphere. The Department of Earth Sciences boasts strengths in surface processes, sedimentary geology and geochemistry, paleoecology, paleoclimatology, and tectonics, providing a collaborative and collegial environment that fosters a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program that attracts external funding and provides research training for both graduate and undergraduate students. Additionally, they will be responsible for delivering effective instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels and participating in professional service to the Department and University. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a commitment to broadening the participation of underrepresented groups and engaging diverse communities through their research, teaching, and public engagement efforts. Familiarity with pedagogical techniques that cater to students with diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and intellectual interests is also highly valued.
