MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant/Associate Dean for Research: Is administratively responsible to the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station (FAES) in UF’s Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS); Provides statewide leadership and support for agriculture, natural resources, and interrelated human systems research programs that address the mission and goals of UF/IFAS and the FAES; Fosters collaborative working relationships with UF administrators, faculty, staff, and students that support the conduct and coordination of world-class, basic discovery, innovation and applications research on agriculture, natural resource and human systems, including a liaison role with the Council of Research Associate Deans (CORAD); Works collaboratively with program leaders at UF/IFAS Institutes, Centers, and programs on issues relevant to FAES mission and goals, including development of strategic research initiatives that build upon institutional strengths and support preeminence, including but not limited to UF/IFAS’s expanding role in artificial intelligence research; Builds and maintains effective and efficient programmatic relationships with international, federal, state and local stakeholders, including agencies that support the entire spectrum of research from basic to translational levels; Administers and provides oversight for targeted investments in faculty research programs by endowment-based, capacity fund-based, and internal UF and IFAS FAES-based research programs, building faculty success at all career stages, including but not limited to Early Career Seed Grants, grant writing workshops and consultancies, and Excellence Awards for Graduate Research; Collaborates and provides linkages with the Florida Cooperative Extension Service and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences to support the land grant mission of UF, including potential engagement (depending on candidate expertise and interest) with the Support for Emerging Enterprise Development Integration Teams (SEEDIT) program, the undergraduate research internship program, the UF/IFAS Statistical Consulting Unit, and the Invasion Science Institute; Strengthens the development and implementation of executive functions of FAES, including policy development, strategic planning, and administration of research activities to ensure efficient workflows and strong communication between FAES and other UF offices; Supports professional development of faculty at all career stages, including but not limited to preparing evaluative letters for tenure and promotion, third-year progress assessments, and post-tenure review dossiers of statewide faculty, and coordination of faculty rotator projects that add value to the FAES; Promotes cross-cutting, interdisciplinary research efforts that integrate science across all colleges with external institutions, including engagement with AgInnovation South, previously known as the Southern Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors; and Represents the Dean for Research Office at UF, UF/IFAS, industry, agency, and regulatory functions as assigned; In accordance with the UF/IFAS land-grant mission, all UF/IFAS faculty are expected to be supportive and engaged in all three mission areas – Research, Teaching and Extension – regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
