About The Position

The City of Yonkers Office of the Corporation Counsel is accepting applications for one (1) attorney position. The successful applicant may be hired as either an Assistant Corporation Counsel or an Associate Corporation Counsel dependent upon years of prior legal experience and other qualifications. Based upon the current operating needs of the Office of the Corporation Counsel, this full-time attorney position will be assigned the following job duties:

Requirements

• Must meet the minimum qualifications for either Assistant Corporation Counsel or Associate Corporation Counsel as specified in the civil service job specifications

Responsibilities

• Advise the Yonkers City School District, including school administrators, board members, and staff, on legal matters related to a wide range of education-related issues including, but not limited to, student discipline, DASA, school records/FERPA, FOIL, and school board governance in order to monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing education
• Provide legal counsel on matters related to IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and other special education-related laws
• Represent the school district in legal proceedings including, but not limited to, IDEA due process hearings, NYS Education Department Complaints, and Office for Civil Rights complaints
• Collaborate with administrators to resolve disputes/parent complaints
• Provide training to school personnel on legal issues and procedures
• Assist in the development and review of school district policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
• Attend Committee on Special Education meetings and Superintendent Hearings when a parent attends with legal counsel/advocates
• Attend school board committee and/or stated meetings, as necessary
