About The Position

The City of Yonkers Office of the Corporation Counsel is accepting applications for one (1) attorney position. The successful applicant may be hired as either an Assistant Corporation Counsel or an Associate Corporation Counsel dependent upon years of prior legal experience and other qualifications. Based upon the current operating needs of the Office of the Corporation Counsel, this full-time attorney position will be assigned various job duties related to legal counsel for the Yonkers City School District.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• Prior legal experience in education law or related fields is preferred.

• Experience with special education law and compliance issues.
• Familiarity with federal, state, and local education regulations.

Responsibilities

• Advise the Yonkers City School District on legal matters related to education issues including student discipline, DASA, school records/FERPA, FOIL, and school board governance.
• Provide legal counsel on matters related to IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and other special education-related laws.
• Represent the school district in legal proceedings including IDEA due process hearings, NYS Education Department Complaints, and Office for Civil Rights complaints.
• Collaborate with administrators to resolve disputes and parent complaints.
• Provide training to school personnel on legal issues and procedures.
• Assist in the development and review of school district policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Attend Committee on Special Education meetings and Superintendent Hearings when a parent attends with legal counsel/advocates.
• Attend school board committee and/or stated meetings, as necessary.
