About The Position

The Shelter Medicine Program at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor to join the team of 5 faculty members, 1 rehire retiree, and 3 technicians. The Shelter Medicine Program provides spay/neuter services to 25+ shelters and rescue groups in Mississippi. The Shelter Medicine Program also provides shelter visits for third year veterinary students to perform basic physical examinations, health maintenance evaluations, and population level recommendations for the shelter. Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Ability to obtain licensure in Mississippi.
  • Assistant Clinical Professor: Two (2) years of experience as a small animal veterinarian
  • Associate Clinical Professor: Four (4) years of experience as a small animal veterinarian

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching and clinical/surgical experience is highly preferred.
  • Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
  • Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Responsibilities

  • Work collegially with other staff and faculty members to support the vision and mission of the Shelter Medicine Program.
  • Receive mentorship and training in high volume, high quality spay/neuter surgical techniques and in teaching, training, and assessing professional veterinary students.
  • Provide leadership, direction supervision, training, and assessment for veterinary students and house officers in soft tissue surgical skill acquisition with the Shelter Medicine Program.
  • Accompany, supervise, and tech veterinary students during walk-thru consultations at area animal shelters and rescue groups, providing written plans for improvement, assistance in disease outbreak situations, and management of various medical cases within the shelters.
  • Be involved with our new Shelter Medicine Clinic.
  • Supervise second year surgery labs.
  • Assist in medical and surgical care for the animals under the stewardship of the Homeward Bound Program, with assistance by other CVM faculty and staff.
  • Provide the occasional didactic lecture or rounds presentation for veterinary students.
  • Provide support by phone or in person for Community Veterinary Services boarding patients.
