About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Director of Athletics - Sports Medicine for day to day operations, as directed by the Head Team Physician, this position is responsible for assisting with the coordination of all athletic training services for the student-athletes competing at the intercollegiate level for the College of the Holy Cross. Athletic training services include, but are not limited to coordinating the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral and rehabilitation of injuries/illnesses to student-athletes of college's 27 varsity sports. Sports covered may include: Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Soccer and Softball. The Assistant / Associate Director of Sports Medicine - Athletic Trainer will be expected to provide excellent care to student-athletes while adhering to all rules and regulations as set forth by the College of Holy Cross, the Patriot League, Atlantic Hockey (Men's Ice Hockey), Hockey East (Women's Ice Hockey), Intercollegiate Rowing Association (Men's Rowing), NCAA Division I and the BOC. This position requires a strong ability to communicate frequently and accurately with the Associate Director of Athletics - Sports Medicine, coaches, student-athletes, parents, team physicians, Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Service (CAPS) and other various on/off campus departments. It is expected this candidate will demonstrate exemplary personal conduct, serve as a role model for student-athletes, maintain a commitment to excellent customer and/or student service and possess ethical and responsible decision-making.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required
  • Board of Certification Credential required
  • State of Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professionals Licensure required
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications
  • NPI Number preferred, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hiring
  • Experience managing multiple tasks, and while working proficiently under pressure.
  • Experience with contact and collision sports (ie Ice Hockey) and contact sports (ie. Field Hockey)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects effectively with tight deadlines.
  • Work is of medium demand. Lifting 100 pounds' maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination. May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Applied Knowledge: The Assistant/Associate Director of Sports Medicine must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems. Assessment, evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be required.
  • Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Attention to Detail: The Assistant/Associate Director of Sports Medicine should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families.
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision

Responsibilities

  • Provide the best possible medical care for the student athletes and visiting athletic teams
  • Provides injury evaluation, treatment, and first-aid care for assigned teams, events, and day to day on-call assignments.
  • Plans and implements rehabilitation programs for serious injuries or post-surgical conditions.
  • Keeps and maintains medical records for each athlete
  • Maintains the inventory for medical supplies and over the counter medications
  • Assists in the supervision of athletic training students in the training room and at the practice or competition facility
  • Engaging in effective written and oral communication with members of the coaching staff, athletic administration, and sports medicine staff
  • Assist with established guidelines of the health care of profession and medical community, promoting a communication network for student-athletes, parents, coaches and medical personnel.
  • Organization and completion of student-athlete pre-participation physical examinations; coordinating timely referrals and communicating with the Team Physicians regarding student-athlete injuries and medical condition and plan of care.
  • Working with Athletic Training Education Program students to set up necessary emergency and safety equipment for practice and competition; Being familiar with Departmental Emergency Plan for practice and competition and be prepared to initiate during practice and competition as well as provide CPR/AED and on field extrication
  • Must be a student of their craft and strive to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques used in the athletic industry.
