About The Position

The Scientist will play a key role in advancing basic and translational research in the field of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This position involves performing a wide range of highly technical and complex research activities, contributing to scientific discoveries that enhance our understanding of immune–metabolic pathways in intestinal inflammation.

Requirements

  • PhD OR master's degree and two years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab OR bachelor's degree and four years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab. Laboratory experience should be related to area of assignment. Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.
  • PhD or MD MD/PhD with at least two years of professional research experience in a technical or biomedical laboratory setting.
  • Strong background in immunology, cellular metabolism, and/or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in stem cell and organoid culture, as well as cellular and molecular biology techniques such as flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, Western blotting, and imaging assays.
  • Proven track record of scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications in relevant fields.
  • Laboratory experience and technical expertise should align with the research focus on immune–metabolic interactions in intestinal inflammation.

Responsibilities

  • Under minimal supervision, the Assistant Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex tasks necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.
  • Responsible for working with experimental platforms specific to the hiring Program.
  • Duties will include but are not limited to experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation and communication of results of basic and/or translational research.
  • Will be required to review literature and apply advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development.
  • May assist in grant and other funding applications, as necessary and appropriate.
  • With the approval of the responsible Emory faculty director, the Assistant Academic Research Scientist may serve as the principal investigator on funded (grant) proposals.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required.
  • Apply advanced technical expertise to design, execute, and interpret experiments, and recommend innovative approaches to improve research quality and reproducibility.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the management of research teams and scientific projects, including developing protocols, overseeing experimental workflows, and mentoring junior staff and trainees.
  • Contribute to the preparation and submission of regulatory documents such as IACUC, IRB, and Biosafety applications.
  • Ensure quality assurance and compliance of research activities conducted by team members.
  • Participate in grant preparation and scientific writing, and with the approval of the faculty director, may lead independent research projects or oversee specialized instrumentation and methodological development.
  • Uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity, collaboration, and professionalism in support of the laboratory’s mission.
