The Asset Protection (AP) team at Nordstrom plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of customers, employees, and the integrity of the brand. The primary function of the AP team is to partner with the store's Emergency Response Team (ERT) to prepare for, respond to, and recover from various emergencies. Additionally, the team is responsible for protecting company profits by mitigating shrinkage risks and preventing, investigating, and resolving theft incidents, ensuring that merchandise remains available for customers. The strategies employed by Asset Protection are guided by three key pillars: Protect People, Protect Physical Spaces, and Support Product Accuracy. These pillars emphasize the importance of employee and customer safety, safeguarding physical assets, and improving inventory accuracy to reduce shrinkage. A typical day for an Asset Protection Agent involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at maintaining a secure environment. Agents are tasked with resolving theft incidents by exercising good judgment and conducting quality apprehensions in high-risk areas, all while adhering to established policies and procedures. They utilize technology and surveillance tactics to identify theft trends and drive a culture of shrinkage reduction through the implementation of action plans and merchandise protection standards. Furthermore, agents are involved in internal theft investigations, gathering evidence, and collaborating with AP leadership and investigation teams. Monitoring theft activity through video systems and leveraging RFID data to track merchandise movement are also key components of the role. Asset Protection Agents are responsible for maintaining the overall safety and security of the store by responding to and reporting security incidents, including medical emergencies. They lead security audits, participate in store meetings, and conduct shrinkage awareness training. As members of the ERT, agents actively engage in emergency response training, including First Aid, and are required to prepare and submit detailed reports for high-profile incidents and investigations. In some cases, they may also be called to testify in court regarding criminal or civil cases. Building partnerships with store leaders, neighboring retailers, and local law enforcement is essential for fostering a collaborative approach to asset protection.
