About The Position

The position involves operating an asphalt spreader to lay down asphalt according to project specifications. The individual will work closely with a screedperson to ensure proper paving direction and will be responsible for identifying and adjusting high and low spots in the base or pavement. The role requires safe operation of the asphalt spreader on various terrains while avoiding obstacles, as well as guiding trucks to unload asphalt into the hopper. The operator must also assist laborers and other team members in leveling the laid down surface and must adhere to safety regulations set by DOT, OSHA, and the company.

Requirements

  • Requires lifting and carrying equipment up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to read, write and complete equipment reports
  • Valid license and favorable traffic abstract; CDL Type B with N endorsement required
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years paving experience
  • Knowledge of asphalt mix designs and familiarity with asphalt temperature and movement
  • Knowledge of how different paver tracker sensor systems work
  • Ability to rake, operate the screed and see the crown and swales in the pavement
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations

Responsibilities

  • Lays out area for paving direction of asphalt spreader with screedperson
  • Identifies and adjusts high/low spots, crown, and swales in base/pavement
  • Lays down asphalt with asphalt spreader to meet project specifications
  • Operates asphalt spreader safely on all types of terrain and avoids obstacles
  • Operates manual or automatic feeder to control the amount of asphalt feed from the hopper
  • Guides trucks to unload asphalt into the hopper, observing traffic and obstacles
  • Adjusts paver speed based on rolling pattern behind
  • Assists laborers, rakers, and screedpersons in leveling laid down surface
  • Checks vehicle(s) prior to driving and completes required CDL checklists
  • Follows DOT, OSHA and Company safety regulations and policies
