About The Position

The Screed Operator is a key role within our asphalt paving operations. This position is responsible for controlling and adjusting the screed on the asphalt paver to ensure proper depth, grade, and smoothness of the finished mat. The Screed Operator works closely with the Paver Operator and Crew Foreman and serves as a leader on the job site, coordinating with ground crews and truck drivers to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production. This role requires precision, real-time decision making, and the ability to monitor and adjust for thickness, crown, and slope while maintaining consistent paving results in varying job site conditions.

Requirements

  • Prior experience operating a screed on asphalt paving equipment required
  • 2+ years of asphalt paving experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of grade control, mat quality, and asphalt finishing standards
  • Ability to make real-time adjustments based on jobsite conditions
  • Experience working in roadway, parking lot, or commercial paving environments preferred
  • Ability to work safely around heavy equipment and active job sites
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with crews and operators
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Reliable transportation and consistent attendance
  • Ability to work extended hours (typically 40–65 hours/week) during paving season
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and comply with company drug and alcohol testing policies

Responsibilities

  • Operate and control the screed on asphalt paving equipment to maintain proper mat thickness and smoothness
  • Independently adjust screed settings for crown, slope, depth, and surface finish
  • Work closely with the Paver Operator in real-time to maintain consistent paving speed and material flow
  • Monitor asphalt temperature, material flow, and surface quality throughout paving operations
  • Ensure proper joint alignment, transitions, and overall mat consistency
  • Read grade stakes, job plans, and site conditions to make necessary adjustments
  • Coordinate with ground crews to maintain workflow and jobsite efficiency
  • Perform daily screed setup, including pre-heating and inspection of components
  • Ensure finished mat meets project specifications and quality standards
  • Identify and communicate job site issues such as grade inconsistencies or material concerns
  • Train and support less experienced crew members or screed operators as needed
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and promote a safety-first culture
  • Report production, quality, or safety issues to the Foreman
  • Lead by example with regard to safety, professionalism, and teamwork
  • Follow all company safety policies and job site procedures
