About The Position

The Asphalt Roller Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various asphalt rollers (including breakdown, pneumatic/rubber-tire, and finish rollers) to compact, smooth, and finalize paved surfaces, primarily as part of a road, utility, or infrastructure restoration crew. This role is critical in ensuring the quality, density, and finished appearance of the asphalt pavement meets all project specifications.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of proven experience operating asphalt rollers, including static, vibratory, and pneumatic models.
  • Knowledge of compaction techniques, HMA characteristics, and various rolling patterns.
  • Valid Driver's License (Class D or equivalent) with a clean driving record is required.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision to achieve a smooth and high-quality finished surface.
  • Mechanical aptitude for performing routine maintenance and inspections.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, and travel to various work sites in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a construction, paving, or civil infrastructure environment is strongly preferred.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A is strongly preferred. (Required to haul heavy equipment to and from job sites).

Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate various asphalt rollers (static, vibratory, pneumatic) in successive, overlapping passes to achieve the required compaction and smoothness of hot-mix asphalt (HMA).
  • Determine the proper speed and direction of the roller based on the temperature, type, and compressibility of the asphalt mix to prevent ridging and ensure uniform density.
  • Operate other heavy equipment and perform general labor duties (such as shoveling or raking) as needed to support the paving and restoration crew.
  • Guide portable compactors or hand tampers over areas inaccessible to the primary roller.
  • Work closely with the restoration crew on utility cuts, trench repairs, patchwork, and other small-to-medium-scale paving projects to restore surfaces to pre-existing conditions or better.
  • Coordinate rolling patterns and timing with the paving and tack crew to maintain the mat temperature and quality during the compaction process.
  • Perform thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and maintenance checks on the roller and other assigned equipment (fluids, damage, wear areas, etc.).
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, damage, or required repairs to the Foreman/Mechanic immediately.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant traffic regulations while on the job site.
  • Follow directions from the Foreman or Superintendent regarding daily tasks, project specifications, and work priorities.
  • Collaborate with all crew members to maintain a productive, clean, and safe work environment.
  • Complete accurate equipment usage logs, daily reports, and safety documentation.
  • Load and secure equipment onto transport trailers as required.
