About The Position

We're seeking a passionate and resourceful Secondary ASL Teacher to join our team. This is a fully remote, asynchronous teaching role that emphasizes student support, feedback, and mentorship rather than live instruction. Teachers at MOHS do not create lesson plans or deliver live classes; instead, they guide students through our self-paced curriculum on MiaPrep.com, , providing coaching, small-group tutoring, and in-depth feedback on summative assignments. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, all MOHS teachers also serve as Student Advisors to a caseload of up to 20 students, building relationships and helping students meet their goals.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of classroom ASL teaching experience (preferably high school or ASL 1 level)
  • Strong fluency in ASL (10 years or more) and understanding of Deaf culture
  • Proficiency in written English communication for student and parent support
  • Ability to review and assess student videos using provided rubrics
  • Confidence using pre-made materials and lesson plans
  • Professional experience supporting students in secondary education within the last 5 years
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
  • Tech-savvy with an ability to learn new platforms quickly, such as gradebooks, Google Classroom, curriculum platforms, and Google Suite
  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) responsible use of AI tools to increase efficiency in the education sector

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching certification in ASL, World Languages, or Deaf Education
  • Familiarity with ACTFL standards or proficiency-based ASL instruction
  • Experience with online or hybrid instruction
  • Comfort with tools like Google Docs, Zoom, and LMS platforms
  • Online teaching experience (nice to have but not required!)

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for becoming familiar with the structured student learning path, including lesson videos, guided practice worksheets, and ASL assessments.
  • Grading expressive and receptive assignments using provided rubrics, referencing lesson content in feedback, and guiding students toward previously created appropriate practice materials or clarification as needed.
  • Evaluating student video submissions, primarily expressive video assignments and comprehension tasks using provided grading rubrics to ensure consistency and alignment with curriculum goals.
  • Deliver clear, supportive, and accurate written feedback that helps students reflect, revise, and grow in their ASL skills.

  • Host weekly virtual group tutoring one or more times per week to clarify curriculum concepts, address questions, and offer additional support for American Sign Language topics and assignments.
  • Maintain a caseload of students for whom you will provide academic advising, including quarterly check-ins and, in some cases, targeted support plans.
  • Identify struggling students and, together with the Academic Counselors and Student Support Specialists, proactively provide tiered support solutions to enhance their academic performance.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for both parents and students in academic matters in your subject area, ensuring a constructive channel of communication.
  • Actively participate in school initiatives and contribute to the creation and implementation of school-wide academic policies.
  • Lead or contribute to an extracurricular club or activity that aligns with your expertise or passion.
  • Uphold and contribute to our school's positive culture and values, both among the faculty and the student body.
  • Be willing to speak up when things can be improved, and willing to step up when a need is identified, or support is needed within the school community.
