About The Position

The position involves serving as a sign language interpreter for an American Sign Language (ASL) classroom. The interpreter will provide ASL interpretation and/or cued language transliteration in various environments, including classrooms, staff meetings, large/formal training meetings, department meetings, IEP meetings, and interactions with supervisors and colleagues. The role requires effective facilitation of communication between American Sign Language and/or cued language and English, while adhering to the RID (Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf) and/or TECUnit Code of Professional Conduct. The interpreter should possess knowledge of technical signs and/or vocabulary used in educational environments and demonstrate dependability, flexibility, and organization. Collaboration with teachers and staff is essential, along with a willingness to participate in interpreter training opportunities.

Requirements

  • Competency in English, ASL and/or cued language.
  • Must hold a valid certification in one of the following: Virginia Quality Assessment Screening Level III, OR Education Interpreter Performance Assessment 3.5 or above, OR RID Certification.
  • Knowledge of RID (Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf) and/or TECUnit Code of Professional Conduct.
